Paige Miles – American Idol

by admin on Mar.01, 2010, under Season 9

After making the top 24 for season 9 of “American Idol,” Naples native Paige Miles admitted in an interview that she is still scared of the dark.

“I still sleep with a light on somewhere,” said the 22-year-old with a giggle.

But she has no fear of being in the limelight. This is why the former Community School of Naples grad believes she was picked as one of the final 12 women in the competition.

Lilly Scott – American Idol

by admin on Mar.01, 2010, under Season 9

Asked by Ryan if she's ready, Lilly Scott, "the pride of Denver," responds, "I'm so ready." After all, not that many months ago, she was busking for change on the Colorado streets.

"I'm definitely a musician and not just a singer," she says.

She picks a Beatles song, and a most unexpected one — Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cut Fixing a Hole.

Bet nobody saw that one coming — but they probably didn't anticipate a couple of those early clams, either. She's got a flirty voice, and some issues with her phrasing, but she's "making the song her own," as they like to say. In some ways, she reminds me of Megan Joy with a better command of the pop repertoire.

Ellen says, "I think that's what we're talking about. … It's such a random song choice, and you did such a great job with it."

Simon says it's the best of the four early performances, "mainly because I actually felt that you sang this song because you liked the song." He's still not feeling much starpower from her, though.

How to tell when ‘American Idol’ is playing favorites

by admin on Feb.28, 2010, under Season 9

"Most people who watch American Idol are to singing what I am to ice skating. They go, 'LaKisha Jones looks good while she's singing, but the judges say she's not very good, so she must not be very good.'"Chris and Phil shared several tips for reading between the Idol lines with me, so I thought I'd share them with you.

KC James American Idol sends Kara to ‘Heaven’

by admin on Feb.28, 2010, under Season 9

Casey James goes with a love song: Bryan Adams' Heaven. He's sitting on a stool, playing his guitar, staring straight at Kara, who grins like a schoolgirl in love and begins waving her arms back and forth.

Casey does a pretty sweet version of Heaven — comes across as very likable, changes it just enough to make it work for him.

The judges defer to Kara. "Casey, I don't recognize you with your shirt on. … It was hard for me to listen to that," and she thinks he may have gotten pitchy "when I was in your arms." Ick.

Lee Dewize could be dark horse of ‘Idol’ season

by admin on Feb.28, 2010, under Season 9

It’s only week one. It’s only week one. I have to keep reminding myself of that before I freak out about how these “American Idol” top 24 contestants are, overall, pretty dang pitiful. There were a few highlights of the top 12 guys on Wednesday night, but I’ve definitely seen better.I was not a Lee Dewyze fan after Hollywood week. He convinced me on his first live show, however. I totally think he’s a pop-rock artist, unlike what Randy said. He sang his own version of "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, to the point I didn't recognize it at first listen, but he kept me focused and waiting for the climax. And I 100 percent agree with Simon: Best of the night, which wasn’t hard to achieve, but that’s not taking anything away from Lee. He totally has my vote. Since he wasn't one featured much in Hollywood week, he could be considered the dark horse this year, a la Kris Allen. P.S.: Eyes, eyes, eyes. WOW!

After American Idol: Tyler Grady Keeps Talking, Much to His Own Detriment

by admin on Feb.27, 2010, under Season 9

American Idol contestants are, at best, young and idealistic, and at worst, well, young and deluded, and sadly, last night's eliminated singer Tyler Grady falls into the second category.

Grady spoke to reporters today after being booted last night and began a conference call with the media by, well, accusing the media of having it in for him. (That's about as smart as blaming the judges on-air for ypur misfortune, therefore breaking American Idol rule No. 1: Never blame anyone when you get kicked off!)

Tim Urban should ‘Apologize’ after that performance

by admin on Feb.27, 2010, under Season 9

American Idol is holding a contest to design a new Coke cup. Go to the show's website for details. Tim Urban's holding the standard plain-red cup — but you could create a new one!

Now, we get the backstory about how Tim initially got cut during the Green Mile but later got a call from executive producer Ken Warwick, asking him to come back. Other than the people who drove him to the airport that day, he didn't tell his family. They didn't find out until he showed up on TV last week.

Tim has said he's a big OneRepublic fan, and he introduces himself with Apologize, an Idol favorite. He's doing passably until he tries for a falsetto note. Those start weak, and then they get worse. He's got a nice tone in his chest voice, but he needs to stay away from those high notes. Absolutely nothing special here.
