Season 9
American Idol: Week #3, Top 8 Girls
by Jared on Mar.10, 2010, under Season 9
The girls are down to eight and looking to cut two more this week, merging with the boys for the Dirty Dozen. Michelle Delamor was cut last week, after failing to connect with audiences, perhaps because everyone hates Creed. Haeley Vaughn was also shown the door, to great relief, but not before delivering one of the most skin-crawlingly awful performances in Idol history. It’s one of the show’s most peculiar rituals—making the contestants sing immediately after voting them off the show. Such a tradition is simultaneously compassionate and cruel, leading to a flood of emotions that often leads to bizarre final performances like Haeley’s and to melodramatic tears from the remaining hopefuls. Haeley was endorsed by Vote for the Worst, by the way, so so much for that group. If they can’t even concentrate enough votes to save a singer when there are ten to choose from, then VFTW has, without question, no real impact on results. But I’m sure it’s time well spent.

‘American Idol’ semifinals (Top 10 women): And just like that, season 9 begins!
by Jared on Mar.06, 2010, under Season 9
We now interrupt your regularly scheduled ranting and complaining to bring you the following newsflash: The top 10 women of American Idol’s ninth season took to the stage tonight, and as the eloquent scholar Randy Jackson is so fond of saying, more than a few of them “blew it out the box!”
Okay, yeah, we still had to endure unfortunate things happening to Sixpence None the Richer and Miley Cyrus (payback’s a bitch, eh?), but in a season that’s been marked by little voices, big attitudes, and Ellen DeGeneres’ love affair with the word “great,” it was nice to get some actual solid-to-splendid singing on the Idol stage tonight. Crystal Bowersox took CCR to church (and the judges took to their pimpmobiles to spread the news of her inevitable march toward the Nokia). Lilly Scott ordered the Adam Lambert special — “A Change Is Gonna Come” with a side of fabulous feathers — but scored a moment of her own with a unique acoustic-jazz arrangement. Siobhan Magnus hit a note I’m still going to remember in mid-May. Katelyn Epperly took to the piano and officially put her hat in the ring for “season 9 dark horse.” And Michelle Delamor…well, I can’t say she made Creed cool, necessarily, but interesting I will give her!

Siobahn Magnus: ‘Think’ by Aretha
by Jared on Mar.06, 2010, under Season 9
Siobhan Magnus says that tonight she needs to focus on singing her heart out and not focusing on the technicalities. Not long ago, Simon's “funny little thing” tells us, she had a mohawk — and a self-inflicted one, apparently — since she decided that she needed to have a mohawk before she was 30.
Since the judges seemed to miss her doing “big” songs, she's going to do Aretha Franklin's Think tonight — it's the kind of meaty song she likes to sing the most. Between the polka-dot outfit and the pink, orange, yellow and blue lighting, it's got this cool '60s girl-pop sound, removing it just far enough from Arethaland that when she nails the glory note — and what a glory note it is! — it comes as a complete shocker. And the place goes wild!

‘American Idol’ in 60 seconds: Big Mike and the also-rans
by Jenny on Mar.04, 2010, under Season 9
Two weeks ago, when I declared that this was likely the last good season of “American Idol,” I listed a number of cogent and deeply researched reasons that brought me to that conclusion — reasons that were certainly not at all thought up while I was eating mac ‘n’ cheese at a Panera Bread one afternoon.
But there’s another reason that escaped me that wintery day — a new facet of “American Idol” this year that became glaringly obvious to me as I watched this week’s first installment of live performances on Fox’s runaway reality show hit:
The singers are pretty damn boring.

Paige Miles – American Idol
by admin on Mar.01, 2010, under Season 9
After making the top 24 for season 9 of “American Idol,” Naples native Paige Miles admitted in an interview that she is still scared of the dark.
“I still sleep with a light on somewhere,” said the 22-year-old with a giggle.
But she has no fear of being in the limelight. This is why the former Community School of Naples grad believes she was picked as one of the final 12 women in the competition.
